Guest Speakers and presentations

Each month we aim to provide interesting guest speakers and other speakers who present a wide variety of topics related to permaculture and ideas worth sharing. If you have heard an inspiring talk that you think would be enjoyed by our members, or you have a subject you would like us to cover, please send an email to secretary@permaculturenoosa.com.au and share your ideas. Our Guest Speaker for the night was Jenny Blagdon. She talked to us about getting back to nature to improve our well being. There is growing evidence that there are large health benefits when we reconnect to nature.

February 2024 Club Night

Our Guest Speaker for the night was Terri Waller from SevGen. She talked to us about their Galeru property and organisation. SevGen is doing amazing work in the community and also growing and promoting bushfoods.

December 2023 Club Night

Our Guest Speaker for the night was Natalie Sanderson. She talked to us about “Backyards for Biodiversity”. The organisation exists to promote both the importance and potential of urban areas for biodiversity in south-east Queensland.

November 2023 Club Night

Our Guest Speaker for the night was Tom Kendall. He talked to us about “Interconnecting elements into systems.” Tom has been doing Permaculture design on his property in the Noosa hinterland since 2005.

October 2023 Club Night

Our Guest Speaker for the night was Tim McNeilly.
Over the past 15 years, Tim has run over 270 fermenting workshops throughout Australia, educating around 3,000 people about the importance of gut health.
He is passionate about educating people about how they can improve their overall health and well being by introducing fermented foods into their lives, and how to boost their immune systems naturally.

September 2023 Club Night

Our Guest Speakers for the night were Rod Taylor from Carly’s Coop and Kate Grealy from Perma Poultry. They spoke about poultry housing, health, husbandry, nutrition, pest prevention and rotational gardening for backyard poultry. Rod’s involvement with poultry was originally through permaculture systems including chickens and this can be seen in his innovative designs. Kate Grealy is the founder and coordinator of the monthly Perma Poultry Markets in Beerburrum.

August 2023 Club Night

Our Guest Speaker for the night was Aaron Mears from Lulu’s Perch Permaculture Farm. He provided a step by step guide on how to create an abundant food forest that looks after itself!

Aaron is a local permaculture teacher and consultant on the Sunshine Coast who helps people design, build and maintain their food growing systems. He is a student of renowned permaculturalist Geoff Lawton and learned how to create regenerative systems in the Jordanian Desert and deforested areas of the Amazon. Aaron aims to build strong and resilient communities through the shared practice of growing food and his innate love for the natural world.

July 2023 Club Night

Our Guest Speaker for the night was Elena Moctezuma Leyva.
Elena has been a key guiding force behind the cob walls at the community pavilion and talked about sustainable building with natural materials, including how to reconnect to the land by building with natural materials, what is sustainable design and what are natural materials.

June 2023 Club Night

Our Guest Speaker for the night was the wonderful Jane Little. She talked to us on the topic of Compost and the Art of Living Soils. Jane is a kitchen garden specialist and long-time soil lover who has delivered permaculture courses and events for Noosa Forest Retreat and Change Makers/Grounded Permaculture and has co-ordinated workshops for Yandina Community Gardens.
Her Facebook page “Vegie Patch Consultancy” is full of information about humanure and the art of living soils.

May 2023 Club Night

Our Guest Speaker for the night was Elizabeth Fekonia. Her aim has always been to live off the land and to teach others to do the same.
Extensive gardens, fruit trees and livestock provides most of their food and Elisabeth will speak on how she manages to have garden produce all year round.

April 2023 Club Night

The Guest Speakers for the night were Syntropic Farming experts Jim and Julia from Lighthouse Regenerative Organic Farm. The couple shared their message of abundance, community, mycelium networks, social permaculture, healing soil and soul through humbly and consciously connecting with an alive, intelligent system and how this natural world works.

March 2023 Club Night

We had a good start to the year and another excellent Club Night with a great attendance.

The Guest Speaker for the night was Dr. Adam O’Toole who is a new member at Permaculture Noosa. He has worked as a soil scientist since 2010 with a specialty in the use of biochar in agriculture. Biochar is a nature-based solution for carbon dioxide drawdown via long term soil carbon sequestration. It is also a versatile material which can be used as a potting soil media, filtration media, and general soil improver.

February 2023 Club Night

We had a good start to the year and another excellent Club Night with a great attendance.

The Guest Speaker for the night was Karen McElroy who is a leading naturopath, medical herbalist, nutritionist and counsellor.
She talked to us about digestion, metabolism and gut health.

06 December 2022 Club Night

We had another excellent Club Night with a great attendance.

The theme of the night was both honey bees and native bees.
Gayle Currie, from the Ginger Factory, gave us a great presentation on our European honey bees.

01 November 2022 Club Night

We had another excellent Club Night with a great attendance.

Our main Guest Speaker was Helen Andrew, social entrepreneur, mentor, land carer and home gardener.
Helen’s focus is ‘purpose’ in life. Helen described the surge of land regeneration, shared economies, reduction of waste, mentoring and in particular, teaching leadership to assure such practices will work in communities. She supports social and community change actively, works for community building and affordable housing and coaches leaders for the collective gain.

We had another great Club Night with a very good attendance.

02 August 2022 Club Night

We had another great Club Night with an excellent attendance.

Our main Guest Speaker was soil microbiologist/mycologist Dr Sandra Tuszynska who explained how soil microbes feed, nourish and protect plants and introduced the key microbes in a functional soil food web, which are essential for plant health, nutrition, resistance to pests and pathogens, and resilience to drought. 05 July 2022 Club Night

03 May 2022 Club Night

01 February 2022 Club Night

Our first guest speaker was Brett Grimly who is the designer of our new pavilion.
Brett gave us a progress report and spoke about building cob walls inside the pavilion.

07 December 2021 Club Night

Our guest speaker was Tom Kendall who is well known in local Permaculture circles.
Tom is a permaculture farmer with over 40 years farming experience and a broad acre agriculture background.
He gave us an interesting talk about connectivity and design of farm systems.
During the talk he drew diagrams on a white board to illustrate how parts connected together.

02 November 2021 Club Night

Our guest speaker for the night was Luke Halling. Luke is an Entomologist with 20 years of experience in agricultural, forest and environmental pest surveillance, insect identification, training and advice on behalf of the Federal Government. Luke travelled extensively for this work across northern Australia and our External Territories, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Solomon Islands and East Timor. He has taught entomology in Laos, studied honeybee behaviour in Thailand and discovered new species of insects in Australia. He now resides on the Sunshine Coast.

17 October 2021 Our Club Day AGM

Our guest speaker and new President is Noosa Councillor Tom Wegener. Tom is working hard and has exciting ideas about an Agriculture Hub in the Noosa Hinterland. Tom is PASSIONATE about creating climate change resilience in the area and he knows growing food and food security are essential to that. His big idea includes large farms and landowners leasing a small parcel of land to young farmers who are not able to buy land in the area.
