What to do in the garden – March

We are so blessed to have had such a wonderful Wisdom Keeper in the past who volunteered her time to nurture our community gardens, Sue Anderson! She is still with us in spirit. She developed this comprehensive guide for our Community Gardens that can be used in your garden too and can be followed every month.

The monthly jobs and moon plantings stay the same each year. The Moon calendar dates reflect the current year.

What to do in March.

Here are some ideas on what you can put in your garden now:

o Compost – keep compost piles damp and turn often

o Fertilize – Tomatoes with magnesium (Epsom salts) 1 tablespoon Epsom salts to 9 litres of water

o Fertilize – apply fertilizer tea to asparagus seedlings, melons sown in February and potato bed planted in April as well as cabbage, leek, silverbeet, and young passionfruit.

o Fertilize – fertilize peppermint in 3rd quarter

o Pests – watch for fruit fly on tomatoes and capsicums and cover with exclusion bags

o Plant – plant day length neutral garlic bulbs March to April for harvest in August/September, Southern Glen, Glenlarge, Italian Red and Italian Pink cultivars

o Plant – trees and rhubarb

o Plant – plant Rosellas now

o Prune – any dead wood in shrubs, roses, and trees

o Soil – hoe and cultivate to break up soil crust

o Soil – prepare beds for spring bulbs
