Forgive me for singing our own praises, but we are all so proud of our Permaculture Noosa Festival held on Sunday June 9. This was our inaugural Festival and for most of the Festival Planning committee, the first such event of this type we had organised. After a ‘testing’ lead up—days of rain, including Saturday afternoon when all we could do was make contingency plans—Sunday morning dawned with clear skies and bright sunshine! We could not have asked for more perfect weather.
The day’s program was really inspiring with wonderful speakers and workshops by top notch presenters—Geoff Lawton, Morag Gamble, Leonie Shanahan, Heidi Merika, Robyn Bowman, Jason Davies, and The Living Classroom Project for the kids. At lunchtime we featured some very important guest speakers—State Member for Noosa, Sandy Bolton, Noosa Mayor, Tony Wellington, President of Gardening Clubs of Australia, George Hoad, who presented us with a certificate to commemorate our 25 year anniversary, and Fred Palin, Elder of the Kabi Kabi people who delivered the Welcome to Country. Geoff Lawton, as our keynote speaker, gave us an insight into the beginnings of Permaculture Noosa, and emphasised the importance of permaculture to our future. And with a great line up of stall holders and healthy, tasty food options, people kept turning up. It is hard to estimate a precise number, but we believe we had around 900 attendees, not including children.
This was a Plastic Free Event, and everyone from food vendors to stall holders, and our visitors worked responsibly to not only ensure there was no single use plastic in sight, but also very little waste. And of course all our compostable waste was used to make compost for our community gardens. Our thanks to Plastic Free Noosa for their support.
My very sincere thanks to all our presenters, guest speakers, sponsors and supporters, stallholders and especially all the hard working volunteers, who made this Festival great.
For those of you who enjoyed your time, and for those unfortunate enough to miss our big day, I can assure you there will be another one. And we hope to make it bigger and better next time. Watch this space!
We are very pleased to welcome Dr Sandra Tuszynska as our guest speaker this Thursday as part of our Club Night, and don’t forget our Winter Solstice curry smorgasbord also. It should be a great evening.
Among all the other wonderful events being held over the next month, don’t miss the special screening of the new Australian film 2040 on Tuesday 2 July at 6.30 pm in Noosa. I’ve heard so much about this film and I’m really looking forward to seeing it. Also not to be missed is the Queensland Garden Expo from 12-14 July in Nambour. Permaculture Noosa, in conjunction with Yandina Community Gardens and Northey Street City Farm, will be setting up and running the Kitchen Garden, as well as our combined stall. Come along and say hello! Details of both events are featured in our newsletter.
