Nut Grass – just mentioning those words will make most gardeners cringe!
When it appears in our garden it is one of those challenges which most of us face at some time.
The plant is remarkably stubborn and is a real survivor . If it is left unchecked it will spread like wild fire. This is due to it’s unique adaptation of having a nut buried in the ground and networks running off it which run to the surface to form leaves. As we know, just pulling out the stalk does not mean the end, as the nut will then produce another new stalk. Below is a link to a good Youtube which describes strategies to slowly get rid of this grass without using poisons (which we wouldn’t use and they don’t work well anyway). The idea for this article and link was kindly supplied by Debbie T.
Editors note: I only have a small garden and have eliminated Nut Grass. It took some months and some perserverance. Basically everytime I saw a shoot I carefully dug down and traced the network until I found the nut. Once all the nuts had been removed, that was the end of the problem.
