- 40 ml Cloudy ammonia
- 2ml vanilla extract
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 litres water
I mix all ingredients together then divide the liquid into four 2 litre plastic milk containers which I have made a row of holes (with a hot soldering iron !) around the halfway mark. Then hang them around the perimeter of the fruit fly exclusion area.

Good morning John,
Could you pleaase tell me how long the bait is effective ?
Has it got to be replaced regularly or when it is all evaporated ?
Kind regards,
Michel
In my experience I replaced it every couple of weeks to a month because it either evaporates or fills with flies! Best to hang in a shady place where the flies prefer to rest. Maria
how soon do I need to do it? fruit is formed about a week ago I think… I’m in Katoomba
yrs hopefully……
Hi Shirley
It’s best to start baiting earlier rather than later. Some people do it as soon as flowers appear, just to be safe. Here’s a link which tells more…at what stage do fruit need protection against fruit fly: http://preventfruitfly.com.au/controlling-fruit-fly/the-challenge-of-fruit-fly-controlwhy-can-fruit-fly-control-be-challenging/
oh dear… those fruit fly look pretty…. um… scary and they may have got there before me. My friend Rob tells me though that even acting now may be in time to save much of the fruit.
at least it’s better to let the fruit fly win this year, rather than use some deadly poison.
I will let you know what happens. best, Shirley aka Baglady
