Citizen Composter is an in depth practical training program in the fundamentals of making and using ‘proper’ compost and an exploration of the 12 Principles of Permaculture. Each week there will be different systems and practices to manage and convert a full range of plant and animal wastes into compost.

The course runs for 12 weeks over winter and will lead into and support the Foundations of Food Gardening program in Spring. It is designed to enable people to attend all or any of the sessions, and an illustrated guide to the theory & practices will be provided for each session. Participants are also able to gain credits towards attaining their Permaculture Design Course as part of the Perennial Permaculture Program.

Citizen Composter will cover:

– site planning and design

– static compost heap construction

– incremental composting

– turned heap production systems

– compost diagnostics and DIY thermometer

– food waste bin and worm farm systems

– compost support plants

– leaf mould baskets

– branch & woodchip mulching for mycelium

– integrating small animal systems

– using compost and compost teas

The program creates a community of Composters and reconnects urban & rural waste streams back to the soil and sustainable food production.

The course is being run on Monday afternoons from 3.00 to 4.30 pm at The Big House in Pinbarren. Cost is $15 per session. If interested, contact Daniel at deighton.dan@gmail.com.
