A little news below from our Community Garden and news from the CSA grant – rejuvenating the community garden.
Last weekend there was some progress in getting a 240 volt irrigation system installed at the community gardens. Luuk from LWK Trading with help from members Adam O’Toole and Peter Ward did some great work in digging a 900 mm deep trench from the Pavillion to the existing water tanks.
The plan is to exploit the solar energy we are producing from the solar panels to run the irrigation pump during the day, and make better use of the harvested water that we have in the tanks. Once we have this in place we will be connecting up the two shade houses and this will enable a secure water source for propagation.
Also in the irrigation plan is to install some additional taps beside the Pavillion next to the main garden area, to make it easier for hand water and putting out sprinklers.
Also planned for this year is to build a potting up area, a drying area for sticks and branches to make biochar, and a vermiponics system for growing lettuce. If you would like to get involved in some of these activities we will be running a series of working bees and workshops between January and May. We are also looking for volunteers who can be on a roster for mowing the lawn and doing the edges at the community garden. We also have an opening for someone to collect food waste from Fika cafe on a weekly basis (in partnership with Tom W) and help out with turning the compost once or twice a month and keeping an eye/feeding the of the compost worms together with Adam O.
A little bit further down the line we would also be looking for volunteers in propagation in the shade houses.
Please contact Adam O’Toole on 0433638325 if you would like to get involved as a volunteer.
