We are very pleased to welcome Rod Taylor from Carly’s Coop and Kate Grealy from Perma Poultry as our guest speakers this month. They will be speaking about poultry housing, health, husbandry, nutrition, pest prevention and rotational gardening for backyard poultry.

Kate Grealy is the founder and coordinator of the monthly Perma Poultry Markets in Beerburrum. This market is dedicated to providing a link between people interested in backyard chickens and breeders who sell heritage varieties which aren’t readily available and is an amazing forum for people to learn about chickens and find breeds suitable for their needs.  The market also has coffee, food, handcrafted goods and local produce available!

Carly’s Coop is a North Brisbane based company who custom make chicken coops for customers in South East Queensland. Each coop is individually made at their facility and fully assembled in their workshop to make sure they assemble perfectly. They were an exhibitor in the kitchen garden at Queensland Garden Expo this year, showcasing their Rotational Garden/Coop which has movable panels and gates between bays to allow chickens to be integrated with garden beds.  Rod’s involvement with poultry was originally through permaculture systems including chickens and
this can be seen in his innovative designs.

The next Perma Poultry Market is on Saturday August 26th at 7 Anzac Avenue, Beerburrum. Gates open 8am with poultry on sale from 9am.

Chickens can be such a valuable part of a permaculture system as well as making great pets, so we can’t wait to hear from Kate and Rod!
