Our Guest Speaker

For this month’s Guest Speaker we are delighted to have Elisabeth Fekonia who has been a permaculture teacher specialising in home food production for over 20 years. She has been in touch with many African farmers from diverse African countries through social media and noticed how people were looking to farm organically but didn’t have a lot of information as to how to go about it. Permaculture and Syntropic farming are all the rage there, but with their primitive means of farming due to poverty and lack of education she felt the need to go and teach them permaculture strategies to help make their farms more drought resilient and productive.

This resulted in a tour through Uganda and Kenya where she met up with a Ugandan friend who is a gorilla conservationist at the Bwindi national park near the Rwandan border. They drove in his small Rav 4 the entire length of Uganda and eventually on to Nairobi in Kenya where Elisabeth taught cheese making along with sourdough and fermented foods. After the workshops in Nairobi they went on to tour seven communities to teach soil health, seed saving and food forest gardening. The presentation will include many photos and stories from the tour.

The photo was taken at Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya where she was presented with a chicken as a special guest to their community. Needless to say she didn’t take it back to Australia with her!
