13th May Workshop – Fungi – The Superheroes of Our Future with Dr Sandra Tuszynska (9.30 am)
May 13 @ 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM$5
Fungi munch on rocks and wood, creating soils and nourishing all life forms. Over 90% of terrestrial plant species rely on fungi to provide them with nutrients, immunity and communication pathways. They communicate across forests; defend trees, feast on pollutants; and are a renewable resource. Fungi are widely studied for their ability to remediate pollution by heavy metals, pesticides, radioactive isotopes, petrochemicals and other industrial toxins. In fact, some fungi even breakdown plastic. By feeding fungi agri-industrial wastes, we can grow bricks, furniture, leather, myco-plastics and myco-diesel – there are truly no limits to what these superheroes can do.
Dr Sandra Tuszynska (PhD) is a passionate soil myco-ecologist (fungal biology). Her goal is to preserve and encourage biodiversity from the ground up – starting with soil remediation by fungi. She inspires others into action through evocative science communication.
