12th August Workshop – Spilling the Beans: Coffee Growing & Processing at Home with Phillip Richards (9.30 am)

In the workshop Phillip Richards will discuss growing the coffee bush and demonstrate the simple procedures involved in processing your own coffee using simple, inexpensive methods and materials. Participants will handle examples of the beans from all stages of processing. You will experience how it looks, how it feels, and how it smells and, if you are very lucky, how it tastes. Coffee can be grown quite successfully here on the Sunshine Coast.
Phillip has been growing coffee in Yandina for twelve years. A writer, he has published articles on sustainability topics such as coffee growing and – recently – making guava vinegar, and recycling, removing and re-siting houses. Formally an organic vegetable farmer (Childers, BFA certified), and a teacher in NSW and on the Sunshine Coast, he lives on a small acreage beside the Maroochy River. In a garden full of birds, bees, trees and a few cooks, he and Louise grow all their own fruit vegetables as well as enough coffee for regular cups.
